What is Black Seed Oil

Used for 3,000 years.
Now backed by science.

Black seed — known in Arabic as Habba al-Sawda — comes from the Nigella sativa plant. It has been used as a natural remedy across Islamic civilisation for over 1,400 years, referenced directly by the Prophet ﷺ. Today it is one of the most studied botanicals in the world, with over 1,200 peer-reviewed publications confirming what prophetic tradition described long ago.

Sunna Foods uses cold-pressed Egyptian Nigella sativa — the same variety referenced in prophetic tradition and the one with the highest concentration of the active compound thymoquinone.

The Science

Why it works.
The active compound.

The main reason black seed oil is so powerful is a single molecule called thymoquinone (TQ). It makes up 30 to 48 percent of the oil in high-quality Egyptian black seed. TQ is anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting, antibacterial and antioxidant — all at the same time. Very few natural compounds do this many things at once, which is why the research on Nigella sativa is so extensive.

Primary bioactive

Thymoquinone

C₁₀H₁₂O₂  ·  Monoterpene ketone

Found in 30 to 48 percent of Egyptian black seed oil. Responsible for the majority of the documented health benefits. Works across multiple body systems simultaneously.

Health Benefits

What it actually
does for your body.

These are not marketing claims. Each of the following is supported by multiple human clinical trials published in peer-reviewed journals.

01

Stronger immunity

Multiple clinical trials show black seed oil significantly increases natural killer cell activity. Particularly well studied for immune defence during winter months and in people who get sick frequently.

02

Reduces inflammation

Thymoquinone blocks one of the main inflammation pathways in the body. Measurable reductions in CRP — the standard inflammation marker — have been documented consistently across studies.

03

Supports the gut

Shown to be antibacterial against H. pylori — a bacteria responsible for most stomach ulcers. Also supports a healthy gut lining and reduces digestive discomfort and bloating.

04

Blood sugar balance

Clinical trials show meaningful reductions in fasting blood glucose and HbA1c. Particularly relevant for those with high sugar intake or family history of diabetes.

05

Breathing and lungs

One of the most studied uses. Significant reductions in asthma symptoms and bronchial sensitivity shown in multiple trials. Beneficial for anyone with respiratory issues or seasonal allergies.

06

Antioxidant protection

Elevates the body's own antioxidant enzymes — glutathione and SOD. These protect cells from daily damage caused by pollution, stress and poor diet.

The Sunnah

What the Prophet ﷺ
told us 1,400 years ago.

Black seed is one of the most explicitly mentioned remedies in all of Hadith literature. These are authentic narrations — not folklore. Islamic scholars have studied their meaning and application for over a millennium. Modern science has not contradicted what was said. It has confirmed it.

« إِنَّ فِي الْحَبَّةِ السَّوْدَاءِ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ إِلَّا السَّامَ »

"Indeed in the black seed there is healing for every disease except death."

Sahih al-Bukhari 5688

« عَلَيْكُمْ بِهَذِهِ الْحَبَّةِ السَّوْدَاءِ فَإِنَّ فِيهَا شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ »

"You should use this black seed. For indeed it contains a cure for every disease except death."

Sahih Muslim 2215

« وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ »

"And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers."

Surah Al-Isra 17:82

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyya dedicated an entire chapter to black seed in his Tibb al-Nabawi. Ibn Sina documented it in his Canon of Medicine. Both described its warming properties and broad action across body systems.

Modern science has confirmed what Islamic scholars wrote over 800 years ago.

What scholars said

The statement "healing for every disease" has been interpreted by classical scholars as meaning black seed contains benefit for a wide range of ailments — either directly as physical medicine or through its effects on the body's general constitution and immune strength. This is not hyperbole — it is a description of broad therapeutic action, which is exactly what the research shows thymoquinone to have.

How to Use

Simple.
Take it every day.

Consistency matters more than anything else with black seed oil. The benefits build over weeks, not hours. This is how to get the most out of it.

DOSE

2 capsules daily

Two capsules provides a precise, effective dose of cold-pressed Egyptian Nigella sativa without the taste of liquid oil.

TIMING

Morning, before food

Taking it on an empty stomach in the morning maximises absorption. Pairs well with honey — a combination recommended in the Sunnah.

RESULTS

4 to 8 weeks

Benefits — especially immune and inflammation markers — become measurable after consistent daily use over 4 to 8 weeks. Not an overnight supplement.

STORAGE

Cool, dark place

Keep away from direct sunlight and heat. Thymoquinone degrades with light and temperature exposure. Room temperature storage is fine.

Questions

The most common
questions answered.

Why Egyptian and not other origins?
Egyptian Nigella sativa has the highest thymoquinone concentration of any geographic variety — 30 to 48 percent. This is due to Egypt's specific climate and soil. Ethiopian, Turkish and Indian varieties typically yield much lower concentrations. Higher TQ means more therapeutic benefit per capsule.
Why cold-pressed?
Thymoquinone breaks down with heat. Cheaper products use heat extraction which destroys 40 to 60 percent of the active compound. Cold pressing preserves the full bioactive profile. You pay a little more and get a product that actually works.
Is it safe to take every day?
Yes. Daily long-term use at standard doses has been confirmed safe in clinical trials lasting up to 12 months. No significant side effects reported in healthy adults. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication, check with your doctor first.
How is Sunna Foods black seed oil tested?
Every batch is independently tested by Dr. Markus Born in Germany. Testing checks thymoquinone levels, heavy metals, bacteria, yeasts and moulds. A Certificate of Analysis is produced per batch. Third-party testing — not self-certified.
Can I take it with other supplements?
Yes. It works particularly well alongside zinc for immune support, omega 3 for broader anti-inflammatory benefit and magnesium for general wellness. No negative interactions with standard supplements. If you take blood thinners or immunosuppressants, check with your doctor.
What does Habba al-Sawda mean?
It means "the black seed" in Arabic. It is the exact name used in the authentic hadith of the Prophet ﷺ. The plant is also called Nigella sativa in Latin and kalonji in South Asian languages. All the same plant — one of the most powerful natural medicines ever documented.
